When you first add your image to your Facebook profile, the photo or avatar doesn’t have to be a picture of you. However it’s a good idea to use your own photo, at least when you first start out, so that people can be sure it is you when they’re choosing whether or not to add you as a friend.
Most people change their profile photos on a regular basis though. You can use just about any image as long as you have permission to do so.
Bear in mind that your Facebook profile picture is typically shown in a very small size in search results, so if you’re wanting to be found by your friends, a closeup picture of your face will be your best choice, at least until you’re established on the site.
